Autumn is in the air, there’s a chill in the breeze and the leaves are changing shades from green to gold…
Just kidding!
This is Gran Canaria and the weather forecast expects bikini season and high temperatures at least through November š. And sinceĀ Canary Islands summer hasnĀ“t really ended yet, neither have the festivals!
October brings us live music atĀ Festival CeroĀ along the Las Palmas coast, OktoberfestĀ in the heart of historic Vegueta, a cozy autumn apple festival in the mountains of Valleseco of course, the unique traditionalal Finaos celebrations all around the island. Despite the lack of pumpkin spice and fluffy sweaters this fall, there’s plenty to keep you busy in Gran Canaria if you get lost out there.

Roasted chestnuts, traditional folk music and plenty of honey rum.
While most of the English speaking world has Halloween in their Jack-o-Lantern head, the Canary Islands are preparing for Finaos.
La Noche de Finaos is a time to remember, honour and celebrate loved ones who have passed on before us, set to the tune of traditional malagueƱos, snacks and treats made with almonds, walnuts and honey and plenty of the Canarian joie de vivre. Read all about the history and traditions of the unique Finaos celebrations in the Canary Islands.
Vegueta: A few years ago, I experienced my first Finaos in Vegueta and I highly recommend checking it out! The action centers along Calle Mendizabal. Just follow the sound of the timples!
Agaete:Ā Everyone knows that Agaete loves a good party, and this year theyĀ“ll be celebrating at Coffee & Wine Bar Los Berrazales in Plaza Tomas Morales with live music and plenty of roasted chestnuts! (22:00).

Fiestas del Pilar in Guanarteme:Ā Guanarteme has been myĀ barrioĀ since I moved to Las Palmas, and I look forward to our local festival like a kid on Christmas morning.
The Fiestas del Pilar beginĀ today with the parade of the “SeƱores PapagĆ¼evos” through the street of Guanarteme, and last from October 3-18. The festival includes events like the Drag competition, an incredible romerĆa, spectacular fireworks above the sea and a concert by Midnightsoul Band and Los Lola in the Plaza del Pilar.
Tapas Thursday / Noche de Pinchos in Vegueta:Ā Delicious and unique pinchos, cold beers and warm atmosphere fill the streets of Vegueta this and every Thursday fromĀ 21:00 until the wee hours. Festival Cero: Live music behind the auditorium along the coast of Las Canteras in the Plaza de la Musica. Thursday nightĀ“s featured artists include Ant Cosmos, Mourn, Morgan and Siniestro Total. Entry is ā¬15 per night at the door or can be purchased in advance here.
Fiestas del Pilar in Guanarteme: Normally, this is the best night of the Pilar Party, but sadly due to the construction there will be no romerĆa parade in 2019.
That being said, the Plaza de Pilar will still fill with timples, Canarian treats and people in traditional dress. Wagons pulled by oxen will be stuffed to the brim with local delights like goat cheese and papas arrugadas to share, and music will be provided by AgrupaciĆ³n Tamadaba, Agora y Xerach and Parranda de Guanarteme.
23:45: The PapagĆ¼evos will be out and about tonight, partying with the locals and catching the fireworks around Plaza del Pilar, Simancas, Covadonga, Auditorio, Pavia, Castillejos, Cayetana Manrique Simancas y plaza del Pilar.
00:00: Fireworks start at midnight over the Atlantic near the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.
00:30: Concert by the ArmonĆa Show at the Plaza del Pilar.

For me, October is the best time to come for a visit! The weather is sunny and gorgeous and most of the tourists have gone home, so the beaches and beauty are all ours!

Wow, that is one great list of events. October is my fav month as it’s my birthday month. I would love to visit Gran Canaria someday. I’ve heard about Oktoberfest in Munich but didn’t know they had it here. Will bookmark this post and hopefully visit next year. Thanks for sharing!

Happy birthday month!! It’s a perfect time of year here – still very warm but very few tourists and plenty of fun events going on. The real Oktoberfest is of course in music, but a lot of cities in Europe do their own mini version and it’s always a blast š

I love visiting places that offer free museum entrances. I used to not have much interest in museums, but really enjoy them the older I get. I also love beer so Oktoberfest in Vegueta sounds like it could be a really fun weekend.

I totally got lost with everything on the Calendar. Wow. A lot going on. I would love to check out Octoberfest. Maybe one or two October fests. I could see us checking out honey fest too just because.

October seems like a lively time for Gran Canaria. The fests sound amazing and I’d love to participate in Oktoberfest. Plus free museum days are always a draw for me.

What an incredible list of events! I love the fact that Gran Canaria celebrates Halloween in a similar way as in North America. The day of the dead party sounds like fun.

Wow, there’s a lot going on in Gran Canaria in October. I would not have expected to find an Oktoberfest there. My favourite was the Fiestas del Pilar in Guanarteme – – it sounds like a very local experience!

I didn’t know there were so many fun things to do in Gran Canaria! I would be spending all my time at the fiestas or music festivals. I’m glad that they also have events geared towards Halloween.
