February 2020 Events
February may be the ¨coldest¨ month of the year in the Canary Islands, but with Carnival fever spreading like wildfire there will be plenty to keep you warm!
The month starts off quietly enough with the always lovely almond blossom festivals in Tejeda, Valsequillo and Tunte, along with the usual Ruta de Pinchos for tapas Thursday and Ruta Playa Viva free concerts at Las Canteras beach. And then finally, the second half of the month will bring what we´ve all been waiting for…
✨Las Palmas de Gran Canaria✨

Carnival Monday
Bank Holiday
Carnival Drag Queen Pre-Selection: (POSTPONED FROM SATURDAY) One of the most adored and iconic events of Las Palmas´ Carnival (more so than the queen competition itself!) is the Drag Queen Gala. Dozens compete for a coveted spot as one of the nominees, and tonight you can see them strutting their 9 inch platforms in Parque Santa Catalina (21:00) followed by a massive after party in the plaza.
Los Indianos (Traditional Carnival)
CANCELLED DUE TO CALIMA: Los Indianos Traditional Carnival is one of my all-time favourite Carnival events. While it´s more famous from La Isla Bonita (La Palma), Vegueta certainly holds it´s own with this talcum infused all white party. This is an event you´re going to want to be prepared for, so check out my post on what to wear, what to bring & wear to be for Los Indianos in Las Palmas.
Tiramisu Carnival Party
If you´re not up for a massive night of Carnival, but still wanna throw on a costume, local´s hangout Tiramisu is back at it with their annual Carnival Party and costume competition in Guanarteme´s Plaza de Pilar.
February 25, 2020 (Tuesday)

It´s pancake Tuesday, so grab some crepes to soak up those cañas and head back to Parque Santa Catalina for music, dancing and more Carnival-ing! Today features DJs and a free concert by Juanes at 17:00.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Drag Queen Gala
POSTPONED FROM MONDAY DUE TO CALIMA: The Drag Queen Gala is arguably the biggest, most anticipated event at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria´s Carnival. Dozens of contestants compete for a coveted spot as a nominee, and the gala itself is an explosion of color, dancing, impossible platforms and intricate costumes. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, this event always sells out 💃!
After that QUEEN has been crowned, get ready for a wild night of dancing until the wee hours in the plaza.
POSSIBLE CANCELLATION DUE TO CALIMA: Body Paint Competition
The Body Paint Competition (cancelled due to calima)
On the third and final weekend of Carnival craziness, the Body Paint Competition (Concurso de Maquillaje Corporal) is one of my favourite events, complete with intricate artistry and incredible choreography, where the canvas´ are none other than human bodies.
Ruta Play Viva: You can always expect plenty of ambience at this weekend´s local live music roundup.

Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine)

The first day of March is the last day of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival 2020, and we´re all in mourning. Throw on your best black dress, widow´s veil and fish net tights for an irreverent procession following a giant sardine through the city.
You read that right.
As we say goodbye to Carnival, Las Palmas burns a giant papier-mache sardine at Las Canteras beach in an explosion of lights, colours and fireworks. For details and parade routes, find out more about the Entierro de la Sardina here.
No more Carnival until next year! 🎣 🎆😞
Just kidding!
Carnival del Sur in Maspalomas starts in just a couple of weeks. Party on!
Isleta Sunset at Clipper La Puntilla: If you´re not up for parading through the city, start of your evening at Clipper´s weekly sunset live music event featuring TBA (jazz; 17:30), and then head on down the beach to see the sardine go up in smoke.
