Get Lost in Gran Canaria
January 2020 Events
And just like that, it´s 2020.
The end of the holidays always leaves me a little melancholy, which is one reason why I love celebrating Christmas in Spain.
While most of the world is packing up their tinsel and mistletoe, Spanish Christmas lasts a whole other week after the New Year in sweet anticipation for the three wise men to come on the the 6 of January.
Canarian Christmas celebrations are always a joy and January in Gran Canaria starts with a bang. The first week of January will welcome plenty of Christmas markets, concerts and parades all over the island, and of course the usual palms adorned with fairy lights. It´s also your last chance to see this years´ edition of the world´s largest nativity scene sand sculpture on Las Canteras beach.
The rest of January is looking like a quieter state of affairs, as the islanders settles down from a festive holiday season and take some time to relax before beginning debauchery of Las Palmas 2020 Carnival beginning from mid-February.
Less events this month than usual make it a perfect opportunity to get out and explore some of Gran Canaria´s hidden gems, like the Barranco de las Vacas, Charco Azul and mountain villages like charming Moya in the north. On top of that, the end of the month finsihes up with the lovely almond blossom festivities in Valsequillo and Tenteniguada.
I´ll be adding new events all month as they come to my attention, so don´t forget to bookmark this page for updates.

January 1, 2020 (Wednesday)
Happy New Year!
New Year´s Day tends to be a quiet one in Gran Canaria and the rest of Spain, as many are nursing their New Year resacas after one-too-many uh… grapes 🍇.
You can find me starting off the 2020 just as I ended 2019, on the sand at Las Canteras beach drying off from my first bañito del año.
Expect banks, supermarkets and lots of bars and restaurants closed, but there will still be plenty of places open to grab a bite or drink along the promenade.
January is a new year, and the perfect opportunity to open up a new chapter and make it the best one yet! Weather that means taking up surf lessons, finally taking your Spanish classes seriously or building up your own Gran Canaria bucket list to take advantage of our beautiful island, get amongst it!

´Twas the day before Three King´s Day….
Today is the day the littles have been waiting for since the first notes of Dulce Navidad rang out at Corte Inglés… Three King´s Day! Wherever you find yourself in Gran Canaria, there´s sure to be a 3 Wise Men parade near by and it´s absolutely worth checking out, though the biggest is of course in Las Palmas.
Aside from the fun, games & parades for the little guys, the locals as always love a good party and the 20 and 30-somethings of Las Palmas traditionally take to the streets of Triana after the Three Kings parade for a night of revelery that would put even the nice children on Balthalzar´s naughty list. You can expect all the usual hotspots (Tao, Kopas, Azotea de Benito, etc.) to charge a cover fee for entry. If you´re planning to eat out anything more than a bocadillo or street fare in Triana or Vegueta this evening, don´t even think about it without a reservation.
Three Kings´ Eve in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
In the capital, the 3 wise men will be arriving by boat to the Las Palmas port in the morning where there will be plenty of fun events and attractions to keep the littles busy until the parade in the late afternoon.

Three Kings Eve in Triana & Vegueta
If parades aren´t your thing and you looking for live tunes and generally naughty revelery, make a bee-line straight to Triana where live music and good times reign supreme until we all go to bed to wait for the Kings.
The Las Palmas neighborhoods of Triana and Vegueta are an explosion of events the day before 3 King´s Day.
Day time brings the last day of the Artisanal Craft fair in Parque San Telmo, as well as a street market featuring stalls from local shops, plenty of food trucks and a pop up boutique on Calle Viera y Clavijo. Teatro Cuya will have it´s doors open for those that wish to grab food and drinks in their restaurant, Street Market Triana (yet to be completed and host it´s Grand Opening) will have it´s downstairs doors open for those who wish to sneak a peak at what´s to come.
Nightfall and the end of the Three King´s Parade brings the whole city to the area, where stages have been set up in Parque San Telmo, Alameda de Colón and Calle Guiniguada, as well as a late nightmarket on Guiniguada. Get amongst it!

Three King´s Day
As far as Spanish Christmas traditions are concerned, today is the biggest and most important day of the season. The littles wake up to gifts left by the Reyes Magos and the day is spent playing with new toys and gathering with family and loved ones. Expect supermarkets, banks and the majority of restaurants to be closed, though you´ll surely be able to grab a bite or a drink along the promenade.
Three King´s Day is a family day so don´t expect much in the way of events, and if you´re eating out, be sure to greet your server with a cheerful FELIZ REYES and don´t be stingy on tipping since they´re hustlin´ on the big holiday.

Tenteniguada Día del Turista 2020: With pink flowers bursting from the hundreds of almond trees amid the lush green mountains above Telde, the lovely village of Tenteniguada is celebrating their annual Día de Turista (Day of the Tourist). Telde´s mountains are worth a daytrip any time of year, but especially now as the almendros are in bloom.
Tenteniguada will be packed with folk music and dances in traditional Canarian dress, a lovely artisanal market with plenty of local flavours from the fertile valley, Canarian sports and even the opportunity to milk a cow and guzzle down the cow juice mixed with gofio like the locals do – “Ordeñá de la teta a la escudilla con gofio”.
Aside from all that, there wll be enough free food to taste that you won´t have to lunch elsewhere. Last year as my carnivourous friends stuffed their faces on the huge array of smoked meats and carne de cabra, I tracked down the only vegetarian granny in town who loaded me up with plenty of local queso de cabra and potaje de berros (Tenteniguada; 11:30-15:30).
Mogán Flower Power – TO BE CONFIRMED: In honor of the International Day of Peace, Mogán will be hosting a series of events under the theme ¨El poder de las flores¨ featuring events and entertainment for the whole family in Arguiniguin. Saturday´s events include workshops, a kid´s fun zone and NGO stands providing information from 17:00-21:00 and from 21:00, live music.
